Image of women and babyAfrican Angels is a not-for-profit organisation based in Chintsa, South Africa.  We seek, receive and distribute sponsorship for the education of African children (the Angels) identified as needy and unlikely to receive a continuous and good quality education (early childhood to matriculation) unless sponsorship is received.

The underlying philosophy of African Angels is that it is through children receiving a good quality, continuous education from pre-school to matriculation that will deliver a brighter future for the child, their family, and for South Africa.

African Angels was started in 2007 by Lou Billett, an Australian who moved to South Africa, and partnered with Tracy King, the owner of the King’s Playschool in Glen Eden in this project.  So far there are 22 sponsored children attending school through sponsorship.   Most of the Angels are just starting school and range from 2 – 6 years of age.

All the Angels live in squatter camps, and come from very disadvantaged backgrounds.Image of school construction  We have seen some remarkable changes in the behavior of parents of the Angels after sponsorship has been received, particularly around employment, alcoholism and domestic abuse.  Our approach is one of forming a strong partnership with parents, rather than a patriarchal hand out.  This approach is working.  We are supported by a Doctor who donates her time when needed, and the wider community around where we work.

A mixture of South African and international families, businesses and individuals sponsor the Angels.  We have a long list of children still awaiting sponsorship, and welcome new sponsors who can commit to supporting a child through their education for the long term.  We are also in the midst of raising R160,000 (about £10,000) to buy an ‘Angel Bus’ to take our Angels to and from primary school in 2009.

Before starting school, the parents of the angels are interviewed when their child is registered at the school, and commit to paying a nominal fee per month, and ensuring their child is at school on time, picked up on time and has a packed lunch and change of clothes each day.  Some children have come from extremely disadvantaged situations and have benefited from the generosity of the wider community for clothes and shoes.

African Angels is a registered trust in South Africa, (IT 453/2007) and is a registered as a not for profit organisation in South Africa  African Angels is also a registered charity in Australia.
